BioRegen

Burn baby burn..

Ahead of the main harvest phase of the BioReGen Project, over the last month we have been collecting samples of energy crops grown on four pilot scale field trials. These were planted during the development of the BioReGen Life Project and will be used to provide advanced results two years ahead of schedule. This work included the brownfield site in the photograph below, shown after cutting. Here willow SRC, Miscanthus and Reed Canary Grass have all been grown successfully since 2004. The samples will be used to assess the yield of the sites, and to test for any contamination or differences in fuel properties compared to crops grown on agricultural land.

BioReGen: /bio-re-gen/
BioReGen is short for "Biomass, Remediation reGeneration: Re-using brownfield sites for renewable energy crops". It is a 4-5 year project funded by the Life III Environment Programme to investigate whether brownfield sites can be used to grow plants for fuel (energy crops).
